Parents/Players:
Congratulations on another great in house and travel season at Eden Prairie. And welcome to the offseason where champions are made. Eden Prairie HS plays in the Lake Conference, and it is without a doubt the best girls’ basketball conference in the state of Minnesota, but also one of the best in the entire nation. Just last season we lost to STMA in the semifinal of the State Tournament because Tessa Johnson of STMA was completely unstoppable. Just a few weeks ago she was the leading scorer in the National Championship game for South Carolina. Of the 5 players picked to be on the Final Four All Tournament Team two, Tessa and Paige Bueckers, were Lake Conference players. That is really quite incredible and just shows how good girls’ basketball is in Minnesota, and especially the Lake Conference.
I say this to inspire girls who truly want to play high school basketball at EP to really work hard in the off season. I have exit interviews with every HS player after the season and one of the things I tell everyone of them is that they will not be automatically moved to the higher team next season. To move up they have to earn it by getting better, and to play at our level these girls cannot just play a couple of times a week. HS teams practice/play 5 to 6 times every week yet still my best players train with trainers throughout the season. That is what it takes to be elite.
For youth players there will be many opportunities to train with our very own Angie Wenning this Spring and Summer. She coached 9th grade at EP last season and will continue in that role next season. she knows what it takes to succeed at this level and will push the girls in the skills she knows they need. For the current 8th graders, you are welcome to come to my practices that are listed on the google calendar. there is no cost for these practices.
All of this is not to say that anything is mandatory. I just wanted to be realistic about opportunities available to these girls, and also to let you all know what our most successful high school players have done to attain that success.
